Striking Poses and Seizing Success: My First-Year Adventure as a Freelance Model

TL;DR: Navigating My First Year in Freelance Modelling by Natasha Groves, 24

At 24, transitioning from a criminology graduate at the University of Manchester to a freelance model in London, I've embarked on a journey far from the conventional career path I once envisioned. This year has been an exploration of self-discovery, creativity, and entrepreneurship, requiring me to juggle the roles of both a model and business owner. Through collaborations with established photographers and the transition to paid work, notably with Rotolight, I've faced the industry's highs and lows with resilience. This article recounts my experiences from the start of my career to where I am now, highlighting the importance of networking, along with my most memorable moments throughout my first year.

The Leap into the Unknown

After completing my master’s in criminology at the University of Manchester, I found myself at a crossroad. The structured, predictable path of a conventional career simply couldn't ignite my passion the way the modelling world promised to. Encouraged by my partner, I took a leap of faith, embarking on this journey with a heart full of excitement and a mind braced for the challenges ahead. Moving to London in February 2023, I plunged into the capital, it was the best decision I have made, meeting and connecting with new people and living in a big city - the world is my oyster!

As a freelance model, I quickly learned that my responsibilities extended far beyond attending shoots. I was not only the face in front of the camera but also the driving force behind the scenes. Marketing myself, managing bookings, handling accounts and tax returns, and mastering time management became integral parts of my daily life. Each of these tasks demanded a level of dedication and skill that I had not anticipated, transforming me not just into a model but into an entrepreneur. The autonomy of running my own business was empowering, offering me a sense of control and creativity. It was a revelation to discover that my success depended not only on my ability to model but also on my entrepreneurial spirit.

Building from the Ground Up

In the initial months of my modelling career, laying a solid foundation was paramount. With no portfolio to my name, I embraced the TFP (Time for Print) model, a decision that led me to work with exceptionally talented photographers at the beginning of my career. These early collaborations were more than just photo shoots; they were comprehensive lessons in the nuances of posing, expression, and the collaborative spirit that drives fashion photography. The photographers I've had the privilege to work with have significantly contributed to my portfolio and played a crucial role in my development as a model, improving my knowledge and enhancing my posing skills. Mike Stone (Alternative Capture) was the first photographer I collaborated with. Our shoot in a converted barn was an extensive session that not only ignited my passion for modelling but also set a high standard for the kind of work I wanted to pursue.

Darren, better known as Apollo Flux, took on the role of a mentor, guiding me through the intricacies of modelling. Our subsequent shoots, including a notable one in Wapping, were instrumental in showcasing my growth and boosting my confidence. His mentorship extended beyond the camera, offering insights into the industry and advice on navigating the complexities of freelance modelling.

Sam Barton introduced me to a new level of emotional depth and technical precision in modelling. His invaluable advice on emotion and hand positioning has deeply influenced my approach to every shoot. Working with Sam was a turning point, emphasizing the importance of conveying stories and emotions through modelling, which has become a cornerstone of my personal style.

Arrow Photography (Mike) was one of the first few photographers I worked with in a studio, he introduced me into the world of lingerie and elegance. Mike used the natural light, capturing the sensual mood throughout the whole shoot and my natural self. My favourite images are below:

Together, these photographers have not only enriched my portfolio but have also guided me into the understanding and appreciation for the art of modelling, marking the beginning of a journey filled with growth, learning, and an ever-deepening passion for ths field. Their collective influence has been a catalyst for my development, pushing me to explore new boundaries and continuously strive for excellence in my craft and be the best model I can be.

Transitioning to Paid Opportunities

April 2023 marked a turning point in my modelling career as I decided to pursue paid opportunities and limit TFP photoshoots. This shift was both exciting and nerve wracking, the uncertainty of being booked was daunting, but the idea of taking this career to the next level was exhilarating. This period was filled with moments of self-doubt and emotional breakdowns, reflecting the industry's notable impact on mental health. However, during these difficult times, the constant support of my partner, Hyper Creative, shone brightly as a source of hope and strength. Demonstrating an incredible level of solidarity, he embraced photography to enhance my portfolio and boost my confidence, guiding me through the most challenging phases of my career transition.

My entry into the world of paid modelling was the result of intentional and strategic networking, primarily through Instagram. I invested countless hours in building connections with industry professionals, actively engaging with their content, and effectively showcasing my portfolio on the platform. This proactive networking approach proved crucial in unlocking new opportunities.

My venture into paid modelling officially commenced in April 2023 with a project for Rotolight, where I participated in a photo walk in Bournemouth led by the exceptionally talented Sam Nash. The exhilaration of securing my first paid job, especially with a brand as established as Rotolight, was an amazing experience, especially as my first paid job. The workshop consisted of around 13 photographers – facing the challenge of working with such a large and diverse group pushed me beyond my comfort zone, pushing me into the spotlight that I had never encountered before. This experience not only tested my adaptability but also significantly enhanced my confidence, I learned to communicate and pose for multiple lenses, a skill that proved to be invaluable in my professional growth. Moreover, being featured on Rotolight's page not only expanded my exposure but also opened doors to future paid collaborations with other photographers.

This transition period had both its challenges and triumphs; it was a critical phase in my journey. It highlighted the importance of resilience, adaptability, and the invaluable support of loved ones in overcoming the hurdles that come with advancing one's career in the competitive field of modelling.

Inspirational Sources and Learning

Looking back, I found facial expressions extremely difficult, but with lots of practice and hard work, I believe that I am slowly becoming more confident with them. When models and photographers encouraged me to practise posing and my facial expressions in the mirror, I cringed at the idea. Overtime, this awkward feeling disappeared and practicing my expressions came as second nature. Practice makes perfect!

My journey incorporated drawing inspiration from various sources. YouTube became a treasure trove of information, with Peter Coulson's tutorials significantly impacting my understanding of modelling. His advice on relaxation and natural posing became a cornerstone of my development. Similarly, magazines like Elle and Vogue served as visual mood boards, their pages filled with poses and styles that I aspired to mimic. Lindsay Adler's "Portrait and Fashion Posing Guide" was a revelation, teaching me the importance of high fashion poses and hand positioning, further refining my skills in front of the camera.

Memorable Moments and Achievements

Throughout this transformative year, each photoshoot has left an indelible mark on my journey, contributing to my growth and enriching my portfolio. Although I cannot list every shoot I have done, here are the highlights that stand out:

  • October 2022 with Mike (Alternative Capture) at Burford Manor: This shoot was my venture into the professional modelling world. The magnificent backdrop of the Manor, combined with Mike's expertise, resulted in images that exceeded my expectations. Achieving 5 FPIs (Front Page Images) on PurplePort was not just a milestone; it was a massive self-esteem boost. Furthermore, these photographs laid the groundwork for my first publication and online interview in SWING magazine. This feature was not just a showcase of the beautiful images we created but also an opportunity for me to share my journey and insights into the modelling world.

  • March 2023 with Tabitha Boydell in Manchester: Dressed in stunning ballgowns, this shoot was a departure from anything I'd done before. The elegance of the setting, combined with Tabitha's vision, made me feel like royalty. It was a surreal experience that broadened my perspective on the types of modelling I could further explore.

  • April 2023's Photo walk with Rotolight, hosted by Sam Nash: This was a new experience for me, working simultaneously with multiple photographers. The dynamic environment pushed me to adapt quickly, honing my skills in a way that studio shoots hadn't. It provided me with skills of working in a group setting, which will be valuable for future group shoots.

  • May 2023's Bridal Catwalk for The Wedding House Bridal Company: Walking down the aisle in Bell of the Ball's exquisite wedding dresses was a dream. The event was impeccably organized, offering me a glimpse into the fast-paced world of catwalk modelling and working with established brands.

  • July 2023 with Sandra and Vid (SanvidPhotography) at an Owlery: Modelling alongside the gorgeous model Anna Zapala and the owls was magical. Sandra and Vid's innovative ideas transformed this shoot into an epic experience, showcasing the collaborative spirit of creative photography. It is not every day you get to shoot with owls!

  • October 2023's Busy Month: Reflecting on the year, October stood out for its sheer volume of work, contrasting with the previous year being the quietest. Collaborations with brands like Mimi Holliday and Edge O Beyond were milestones, marking my entry into high-end lingerie modelling. Working with Grewy (Paul) on the Mimi Holliday shoot was particularly memorable, as his professionalism and creativity contributed to a successful partnership that I look forward to continuing.

My First Studio Day at Fine and Dandee Studio: Overcoming my nerves, this studio day was a testament to my growth and the supportive community I've found in modelling. Dee, the owner, was incredibly supportive, making my first studio day extremely enjoyable and I am eager to repeat next year.

First Tour in Manchester: Hosting my first tour was a leap of faith that paid off, allowing me to work with new and familiar faces in the North. This experience has inspired me to plan more tours, expanding my network and exploring new creative opportunities. This was a great insight what to expect on a model tour and helps me work all around the country.

Each of these moments has been a stepping stone in my modelling career, filled with learning, growth, and unforgettable experiences. I'm profoundly grateful for the opportunities I've had, working with such talented individuals and brands. I am very excited about the possibilities that lie ahead, I am ready to embrace new challenges and continue evolving as a model.

  • December 2023's fitness shoot with Mak : Venturing into fitness photography was very exciting, after shooting a few fitness shoots over the course of the year - it ignited a passion to shoot more. The shoot was within a gym setting and Mak not only made the shoot extremely enjoyable, but it was a significant confidence booster. Staying fit and healthy is very important to me and showing off my hard work really boosted my self-esteem.

The Impact on Your Life

Modelling has undoubtedly had a transformative impact on my life, moulding me into a more confident and assertive individual. Initially, the task of arranging shoots and communicating my creative vision to photographers was daunting. However, within six months, I observed a shift in my demeanour; I became more assertive, confidently taking control of the creative direction of my shoots. This journey taught me the importance of collaboration, highlighting that TFP shoots should reflect the ideas of both parties involved, not solely the photographer's vision.

Before embarking on my modelling career, I often found it challenging to voice my opinions or assert my needs, frequently allowing others to overshadow my desires. Modelling has empowered me to stand up for myself, equipped me with the confidence to reject propositions that don't align with my personal or professional standards, and taught me the value of saying no to those who attempt to push my boundaries. Interacting with a range of personalities, from one-on-one shoots to studio days and workshops, has enhanced my communication skills, and taught me how to adapt to various situations. My partner has been an incredible support system, assisting with administrative tasks when they become overwhelming, especially when patience wears thin with challenging individuals.

Relocating to London marked a lifestyle change, arguably the most daunting yet rewarding decision I've made this year. Living in the capital has broadened my social and professional networks, and London's dynamic pace has opened my eyes to the potential opportunities within the modelling industry. Modelling has not only been a career but a journey of personal growth, teaching me resilience, adaptability, and the courage to pursue my dreams in the face of adversity. It has reshaped my identity, my interactions, and my outlook on life, proving to be an invaluable chapter in my story.

Reflection and Looking Forward

Reflecting on this whirlwind first year, I find myself filled with gratitude and anticipation for what lies ahead. The journey so far has been a profound learning experience, arming me with knowledge, confidence, and resilience. These tools will be invaluable as I navigate the future challenges and opportunities of this industry. My aspirations are set high: to collaborate with renowned brands, grace the pages of major publications, and continue on a path of personal and professional growth.

I owe a tremendous amount of gratitude to those who have supported me through this journey. The incredible photographers, fellow models, and especially my partner have been my pillars, offering their support every step of the way. Their belief in my potential has been a constant source of strength. Your support and encouragement have been instrumental in my journey, acting as the wind beneath my wings, and inspiring me to push beyond the boundaries and chase my dreams.

I am proud of my first year as a freelance model and how far I have come, achieving things which I did not believe was possible, and always striving to be the best model I can be. Here's to a future of making more memorable moments, tackling challenges head-on, and embracing every opportunity with open arms. I am eager to continue this adventure, one shoot at a time, alongside those who have been my guide and support through it all.

Thank you for being a part of my story, and for joining me on this incredible journey through the world of modelling. Look out for more posts
